Octo Canyon and Callie's Fall

The second game's story, and the idol who went missing

Official render of Marie from Splatoon 2

Splatoon 2's story mode begins with an absence. Callie, one half of the Squid Sisters and the most famous Inkling alive, is gone. So is the Great Zapfish. And so, once again, is Cap'n Cuttlefish, who has wandered off on business of his own. What is left is Marie, standing alone in Octo Canyon with a parasol and a Hero Charger, waiting for someone to help.

The Splatfest that split the sisters

To understand Octo Canyon you have to go back to the last Splatfest of the first game. The theme was simple and brutal: Callie vs. Marie. Fans chose their favorite Squid Sister and fought it out, and Marie won. In-universe, the result was a bigger deal than anyone realized. The Squid Sisters kept performing for a while, but their paths diverged. Marie stayed close to home and to the family business of watching Octarians. Callie, sidelined and searching for something new, wandered toward Octo Canyon.

That is where DJ Octavio found her. Having escaped his snow globe, Octavio fitted Callie with a pair of Hypnoshades, sunglasses that let him control her mind. The Callie who reappears in Octo Canyon is the same performer, remixed: dark-haired, glittering, and singing Octarian propaganda as the DJ's new star attraction. Fans still debate how willingly she went; the games are clear that the shades are doing most of the work, but Callie herself later admits she was drawn in by the Octarian scene before Octavio took over.

Agent 4

Marie needs help, so she does what her grandfather did: she picks a random Inkling who wanders past and makes them an agent. The new recruit, Agent 4, has no idea who Marie is until much later. They are handed a Hero Shot, sent down a kettle, and told to recover Zapfish. The structure mirrors Splatoon 1's, but the tone is different. Marie is dry, tired, and worried, and her running commentary over the radio is some of the best character writing in the series.

Octo Canyon itself is bigger and stranger than Octo Valley, spread across five areas with industrial themes: a factory zone, a cavern, a district of neon-lit towers. New enemies join the old, and the bosses are a fresh set of rebuilt Great Octoweapons. The Octo Oven, the Octo Samurai, the Octo Shower, and a returning Octostomp each hide the same weak point their predecessors did: a tentacle at the power source.

The final battle

The climax reunites the Squid Sisters in the worst possible way. Octavio, again in the cockpit of the Octobot King, now has Callie at his side, singing for him. Agent 4 fights through the DJ's assault while Marie watches from above.

The turning point belongs to Marie. As the battle rages, she takes aim with her charger and shoots the Hypnoshades off Callie's face. Callie snaps out of it, the sisters duet over the radio, and with the Calamari Inkantation once again ringing out, Agent 4 finishes off the Octobot King. Octavio goes back in his globe. Callie goes home. The Squid Sisters are back together.

Marie did not save her cousin with a speech. She saved her with a charger shot at fifty meters.

What Octo Canyon adds

Beyond its plot, the second story mode fills in the world. The Sunken Scrolls here focus on the Squid Sisters' family history and on the newly introduced Salmonids. Sheldon takes a larger role, supplying the Hero weapons and grumbling about their abuse. The Octarians are shown to be more organized than the first game suggested, with an actual industrial base, and Octolings are treated as characters rather than obstacles, a shift the Octo Expansion will complete.

It also quietly ends the Squid Sisters' first era. After Octo Canyon, Callie and Marie step back from Inkopolis News, which is now Off the Hook's beat. When they return in Splatoon 3, it is as agents first and idols second. The girl who lost a Splatfest and got kidnapped by a DJ becomes a hardened field operative, and the whole story of the New Squidbeak Splatoon is better for it.

Callie's fall has a long shadow. Splatoon 3 references it directly, and Side Order lets Marina's Memverse revisit what a world ruled by "order" might have done to idols who did not conform. The Hypnoshades themselves became a fan icon, and the idea of an idol turned against her audience is one the series keeps returning to. Octo Canyon is where Splatoon learned that its cheerful world could carry real hurt, and that the way to heal it was, once again, a song.
