The turntable-wielding leader of the Octarians, pilot of the Octobot King, thief of two Great Zapfish, and hypnotist of Callie. In Splatoon 3, briefly, an ally.
DJ Octavio is an octopus in a bowl, and he is the most persistent villain in Splatoon. Commander of the Octarian army since the Great Turf War, he has spent a century trying to reverse its result, and his method is always the same: steal the Great Zapfish, drain it to power the crumbling domes, and take the surface back. He fights from the cockpit of the Octobot King, a flying mech with a turntable for a control panel, and his attacks come in time to the beat.
Octo Valley
In Splatoon 1, Octavio's theft of the Great Zapfish sets the story in motion, and his boss fight is the finale: a long, escalating assault of ink missiles and giant fists that Agent 3 must punch back at him. Midway through, the Calamari Inkantation cuts in over the radio, and Octavio's rhythm falters. Defeated, he is imprisoned in a snow globe outside Cuttlefish's shack.
Octo Canyon
He escapes. In Splatoon 2, Octavio steals the Zapfish again and, more cruelly, steals Callie, fitting her with Hypnoshades and making her his hype act. The Octobot King II fight ends with Marie shooting the shades away and the Squid Sisters' duet finishing him. Back in the globe he goes.
Splatoon 3
Return of the Mammalians finds Octavio free and his army collapsing. Octolings have been deserting for years, drawn to the surface by the very song that beat him, and the Octarians who remain are being turned into fuzzy thralls by Mr. Grizz. Octavio, furious at someone else stealing his enemies, shows up in the final battle to help. His Octobot serves as Agent 3's platform on the rocket, and he and Cuttlefish squabble through the whole climb like the old comrades the scrolls imply they once were.
Character
Octavio is a blowhard, a genuine threat, and a surprisingly sympathetic figure. He lost a war to a loose plug, watched his people rot underground, and fought a rearguard action for a hundred years. The games let him be ridiculous without ever making him small, and his brief alliance in Splatoon 3 suggests the Octarian war is finally over, whether he admits it or not. His ink is purple; his wasabi obsession is a running gag; and his taste in music is, grudgingly, excellent.
