Annie

Annie is a sea anemone with a clownfish living in her hair, and the two of them ran Cooler Heads, the headgear shop in Inkopolis Plaza. Annie is quiet, nervous, and endlessly apologetic. Moe, the clownfish, is the opposite: rude, loud, and prone to insulting customers on Annie's behalf. Their double act was one of the first game's most memorable pieces of shop dialogue.

Cooler Heads

Cooler Heads stocked hats and headgear from the major brands, and Annie's descriptions, when Moe let her finish, were sweet and knowledgeable. She was the introvert of the Booyah Base, forever hiding behind her tentacles while Moe berated anyone who browsed without buying.

Splatoon 2 and after

Annie did not open a physical store in Inkopolis Square. Instead she ran the gear shop on the SplatNet 2 app, selling limited items online, with Moe still in tow. In-universe the move fits her: a shy shopkeeper who found a way to sell without having to make eye contact. She appears in cameo and background roles in later games, and her relationship with Moe, who is implied to be more protective than mean, is one of the series' odder friendships.

Character

Annie is a gentle character in a loud city, and the games use her to show that Inkopolis has room for people who are not fresh in the conventional sense. Her fashion sense is impeccable, her confidence is nonexistent, and her clownfish will fight you. Real sea anemones and clownfish live in exactly this kind of partnership, the fish sheltering among the anemone's stinging tentacles, and the games turn that biology into a friendship: Annie provides the home, and Moe provides the sting.
