Deep Cut host the Anarchy Splatcast, Splatsville's answer to Inkopolis News, and they are the first idol group to open a game as antagonists. Shiver, an Octoling with a shark motif and an unshakable cool, is the leader and schemer. Frye, an Inkling with an eel motif and a bottomless appetite, is the fire. Big Man, a manta ray who speaks only in "Ay" (subtitled at length), is the beat and the conscience.
In Return of the Mammalians the trio are treasure hunters who regard the Crater and Alterna as their territory. Each of them faces the new Agent 3 in a boss battle, Shiver riding her shark Master Mega, Frye commanding a swarm of eels, and Big Man swimming through the arena floor while apologizing. They are not villains. Deep Cut steal to support their hometown, and once they learn what Mr. Grizz intends, they join the fight and sing during the final battle alongside the Squid Sisters and Off the Hook.
Their music blends traditional Splatlands instrumentation with modern beats, and their broadcasts are half news and half sibling bickering. At Splatfests each member leads a team, and Big Man's record has earned him a reputation as the quiet winner. At the Grand Festival the trio championed Team Future. They are the sound of the city of chaos: rough, warm, and proud of where they come from.
