The unseen boss of Grizzco for one game and the revealed antagonist of the next: a bear launched into space by the humans of Alterna who returned to find himself alone.
For all of Splatoon 2, Mr. Grizz was a voice. He spoke through a carved wooden bear in the Grizzco Industries storefront, dispatched crews to collect Salmonid Golden Eggs, and paid in gear and points. His manner was gruff and folksy, his motives were never explained, and players assumed he was a businessman with a bear fixation. Splatoon 3 revealed the truth: he is the bear.
The bear from Alterna
The Alterna Logs tell it. After the seas rose, a group of humans built the underground refuge of Alterna and, longing for the sky, began developing rockets to leave the planet. They launched a test rocket with a bear aboard. The launch succeeded; the colony did not. The liquid crystal sky they had built collapsed under the weight of their longing, and the logs fall silent.
The bear drifted in space for an unknown span, then came home. The humans were gone. The cephalopods ruled. Made intelligent enough by the experiment to understand what he had lost, he was the last mammal on earth. He took the name Mr. Grizz.
Grizzco
Grizz founded Grizzco to gather Golden Eggs, and the eggs, it turned out, were fuel. His plan was the Fuzzy Ooze, a substance made from his own fur that converts any creature it touches into a mammalian thrall, and a rocket, built from Alterna's abandoned technology and powered by the stolen Great Zapfish, that would spread it across the planet. Every Inkling and Octoling would become a mammal. Grizz would not be alone.
Return of the Mammalians
He kidnapped Cap'n Cuttlefish, dried him into jerky, and launched. The new Agent 3 climbed the rocket with the whole cast singing and a Smallfry grown enormous on his fuzz, and defeated him in orbit. Grizz's last words are bitter and unrepentant. He does not apologize. He simply stops.
Character
Mr. Grizz is the series' most tragic villain. Tartar was contemptuous; Octavio was stubborn; Grizz is lonely. The games give him a full reveal without softening him, and his final form, a hulking bear in a spacesuit, is genuinely frightening. Grizzco continues operating after his defeat, and nobody in Splatsville seems to know who is running it now.
